Course Curriculum
Module 1: Introduction to MEAL Frameworks
  • Overview of MEAL, key principles, and concepts
  • MEAL frameworks, logical frameworks, Theory of Change
  • This module introduces participants to the MEAL framework, emphasizing the integration of monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning into the project lifecycle. Participants will learn how to develop a Theory of Change and logical frameworks to articulate project objectives and outcomes clearly.
Module 2: Designing Monitoring Systems
  • Indicator development, data collection methods, and monitoring plans
  • Performance monitoring plans, data collection tools (surveys, interviews, observation checklists)
  • Participants will explore how to design effective monitoring systems, including selecting appropriate indicators, establishing baselines, and setting targets. This module covers various data collection methods and provides practical guidance on developing comprehensive monitoring plans.
Module 3: Evaluation Techniques and Approaches
  • Types of evaluations (formative, summative, impact), evaluation design, and methodologies
  • Evaluation matrices, data analysis software (SPSS, NVivo), qualitative and quantitative methods
  • This module delves into the different types of evaluations and the appropriate methodologies for each. Participants will learn how to design evaluations, select sampling techniques, and use both qualitative and quantitative methods to assess project outcomes.
Module 4: Accountability Mechanisms
  • Stakeholder engagement, feedback and complaints mechanisms, ethical considerations
  • Accountability frameworks, feedback tools, ethical guidelines
  • Focusing on the accountability aspect of MEAL, this module teaches participants how to engage stakeholders effectively, establish feedback and complaints mechanisms, and address ethical issues in monitoring and evaluation.
Module 5: Learning and Knowledge Management
  • Learning agendas, knowledge sharing, and adaptive management
  • Learning plans, knowledge management platforms, after-action reviews
  • This module highlights the importance of learning and knowledge management in the MEAL process. Participants will learn how to create learning agendas, document lessons learned, and promote knowledge sharing within their organizations.
Module 6: Data Analysis and Reporting
  • Data analysis techniques, visualization, and reporting
  • Data analysis software (Excel, Tableau), report templates, data visualization tools
  • In this module, participants will gain skills in analyzing and interpreting data, creating visualizations, and preparing clear and compelling reports. Emphasis is placed on communicating findings effectively to stakeholders.
Module 7: Integrating MEAL into Organizational Practices
  • Institutionalizing MEAL, capacity building, and sustainability
  • MEAL integration strategies, capacity assessment tools, sustainability planning
  • The final module focuses on integrating MEAL practices into organizational culture and operations. Participants will explore strategies for building MEAL capacity within their teams and ensuring the sustainability of MEAL systems.
